The MENA Women's Coalition (MWC) emerged in November 2020 as a virtual alliance, uniting women activists from diverse women-led grassroots organizations across the MENA regions.
During the challenging times of the COVID-19 crisis, a series of online dialogues and hybrid panel discussions shed light on the evident lack of representation for MENA women grassroots organizations, both at the local and international levels. In response to this pressing need, MWC was formally launched, using the outcomes from the Regional Dialogue on MENA and Food Systems as a guiding framework for building sustainable food systems in the MENA region, officially unveiled during New York Climate Week 2022.
Since its inception, MWC has been unwavering in its dedication. Through active participation in international platforms such as COP27 and COP28, the coalition has adeptly presented the underlying causes of food crises in the region, employing an intersectional approach. Furthermore, MWC assumed a pioneering role in providing remote mental health trauma support to over 30 mothers and girls affected by the NW Syria earthquake in 2023, enabling them to resume their roles as main breadwinners for their families.
Recognizing the paramount significance of technology and virtual connections on both local and international levels, MWC is resolute in harnessing every available resource to realize its objectives. The coalition members understand the strength of unity in confronting the common challenges faced by MENA women, who, due to factors such as social, economic, and cultural aspects, are among the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The coalition is grateful for the support and access provided by Faith Food Coalition in their efforts.
